“The self is not something ready-made, but something in continuous formation through choice of action.”
-John Dewey
Choice Of Action
I find this concept exciting, intimidating, and empowering, all at once.
It’s exciting because of the nearly limitless freedom we have to choose. The world is ours to affect and to interact with, however we decide. And our very lives are full of potential, and in this country, at least, we have the opportunity to become just about anything we want to be. What we choose to do each day will define how we turn out, will determine who we become. That’s exciting.
The Responsibility of Choosing Well
Choice of action is intimidating because it IS up to me. It’s a monumental responsibility. It’s. Up. To. Me. So if I wonder how will my life turn out? I better not passively wait for whatever happens to come my way, but instead I better step up and make it happen in the best possible way. I need to be proactive. I need to be curious. I need to learn and never stop learning, so that I can make the best decisions. I have the responsibility to make my life turn out well.
It’s empowering because my life is mine to create. Each day, I have the power to affect my outcome. Simple as that.
We Can Choose to Live to Matter
Choice of action is at the very heart of the Live to Matter/Give to Matter concept. We choose how to develop ourselves, then we choose how to interact with the world, and we choose how to give back.
How exciting! How intimidating! How empowering!
Let’s go forth and choose our actions well!
